The original tiara made up of diamonds and pearls set in platinum was made by Cartier for the nineteenth-century Spanish queen, Maria Cristina. She was Austrian born and married King Alfonso XII. Upon Alfonso's death, Maria Cristina was pregnant with the future King Alfonso XIII.

Due to this reality, she became the queen consort, queen regent, and ruled the country until her son turned sixteen to take the throne. 

This stunning Spanish tiara was worn by Queen Sofia of Spain and is now currently inherited by her daughter-in-law, Queen Letizia. She was last seen with this tiara in Madrid at a Chinese State Banquet.
